Donna Sievers of Richland was elected Saturday to the post of president of the Iowa Jaycee Ettes. She competed against two other candidates and was elected on the first ballot.

The open house for the new building of the Farmers Savings Bank in Packwood will be held this Sunday, May 7 from 1-5 p.m.

The Pekin school board Monday night discussed the appraisals of the school buildings and property in the three towns of Richland, Packwood, and Ollie. The board had expressed the desire to give first chance on the sale of the property to each city council.

The annual Richland High School Alumni Banquet will be held in the school gymnasium on Saturday evening, May 27. The classes of 1928 and 1953 will be honored.

The Packwood Community Library is once again sponsoring a summer reading program for interested area youngsters. The Library is planning a kickoff party for June 3.

The Polk Township has recently purchased a porta-tank for the Polk-Packwood fire department. The 1600 gallon collapsible tank will be transported on the new firetruck.

The summer reading program at the Richland Public Library will begin June 10 and continue for six weeks. Children who have completed the first grade through the fifth grade are invited to participate.

The Packwood Alumni banquet will take place this Saturday, June 3, at the Pekin Middle School in Packwood beginning with a dinner at 6:30 p.m.

A number of Packwood veterans took part in a memorial service held Monday at the Packwood cemetery, with about 50 people in attendance.

The Richland Lions Club will hold their second community auction on Saturday, June 17 in the Richland square. The consignment auction was held last year, with a variety of items being sold.

The first order of business at the Richland city council Monday night was to introduce and approve a resolution to accept the plat plan for a third subdivision proposed by Leonard Andeway.

About 1500 people were served Saturday night at the free whole hog barbecue sponsored in Richland by te Commercial Club and a number of local businesses.

After many delays, the “77” Speedway go-cart track will have its official opening this Friday, June 16. Hot laps will begin at 7 p.m. with racing to begin at 7:30.

Plans are being finalized for the Ollie Big Days to be held on Aug. 4, 5, and 6. A parade will be held on Saturday, with the theme “Happy Days are Here Again.”

The 10 members of the Packwood Community Beterment group met last Tuesday to discuss plans for the group sponsored horse show, Clifford Pepper reported the date of the show has been moved from July 9 to July 16.

The Richland Jaycees are sponsoring a 4-wheel drive pull to be held at the Alumni Field and food will be served on the grounds.

The annual Fourth of July observance in Richland will begin this year with the Richland Lions beef and chicken barbecue at 11 a.m. at the Lions Building on the square. The foods also will be served throughout the day during the tractor pull and horse show.

The Lions Club Fourth of July celebration in Richland was declared a big success, with larger crowds than ever visiting Richland during the day to take in the activities.

The Jaycee Ettes held a plant show in Richland Thursday evening, with about 55 guests and 15 club members present.

Approximately 1000 spectators attended the Richland Jaycees pickup pull held on Sunday afternoon at the Alumni Field.

Plans were completed on Tuesday evening at the Packwood Community Betterment Council for the horse show to be sponsored by the group this Sunday, July 16. There will be sixteen classes for the show.

The home of Larry and Mary Sobaski of rural Packwood was just one of the many places in the area visited during the third annual Iowa Young Farmers summer tour held this past weekend, originating in Fairfield.

About 80 people attended the ice cream social in Ollie Tuesday evening, with discussion centering around the Ollie Big Days celebration and progress on the rental units for senior citizens.

Over 35 men from the Polk-Packwood, Richland, and Ollie fire departments were taken on a tour Monday evening on the new Pekin Elementary and Middle School building which is now nearing completion.

Laurie Nordyke daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Nordyke of rural Richland, was crowned Sunday night as the Jefferson County Junior Ag Show queen for 1978.

A postmaster for Richland was sworn in Friday afternoon. Daniel E. Tiemeir of Van Meter had been with the U. S. Postal Service for four years.

A three-day celebration will be held in Ollie this weekend, sponsored by the Ollie Community Betterment Club. The idea for the revival of Big Days came from the town meeting held last spring.

Over 40 men from the Packwood area met last Wednesday night for an informational meeting, to learn more about the Lions Club and to discuss the possible formation of a club in Packwood.

A total of four people have filed nomination papers for two openings on the Pekin Community School Board of Education. They include John Adam, Tom Hoskins, Gary Kessel, and Donna Denly.

The first order of business at the Pekin school board meeting Monday was to review bids submitted by insurance companies for coverage of the school’s vehicles. The low bid was submitted by Williams-Newlin Insurance.

A meeting is planned for Monday, Aug. 28 regarding the formation of an Athletic Booster Club for Pekin. The meeting will be held in the Pekin High School lunch room

The Ollie City Council met in special session Thursday evening to plan the sale of a portion of the property purchased from the Pekin School. A resolution was read which showed the council would like to sell a portion of the land to the Ollie Community Retirement Corporation.

Bill Williams of Packwood says oral approval has been received from the Farmers Home Administration for the construction of 16 apartment units for senior citizens in Packwood.

The Richland Jacees with hold their fourth annual Labor Day demolition derby this Monday, Sept. 4 beginning at 2 p.m.

School for the Pekin system opened Thursday with an approximate enrollment of 703 students. This is down about 30 from enrollment last fall.
